Ganjam, 15th Nov. Six individuals, including four servitors of the revered Tara Tarini temple, were arrested in connection with the recent theft of silver ornaments and cash from the hilltop shrine in Purushottampur, Odisha. Police reported that items stolen in the November 4 heist included silver crowns, a ceremonial umbrella, and deity masks valued at approximately Rs 10 lakh.
The accused, identified as servitors Amulya Rana (28), Bikash Rana (20), Rabin Kumar Rana, and Goutam Rana, along with night watchmen Kalia Dash (35) and Balaram Nayak (45), were taken into custody following police investigation. Authorities seized a cutter machine from Kalia and various electrical items from Balaram, along with Rs 39,000 in cash from Amulya and Rabin. However, the silver ornaments have not yet been recovered, according to SDPO Rajani Kanta Samal, who added that efforts are ongoing to retrieve them.
The theft occurred after the accused reportedly broke through the temple’s entrance gate and stole from both the donation box and the sanctum. The incident came to light the next morning, leading to a formal complaint from the temple’s managing committee and an immediate investigation. Enhanced security measures, including CCTV cameras, have since been installed to prevent future incidents.
