The Delhi BJP launched a mask distribution drive outside metro stations on Monday morning in response to the city’s deteriorating air quality, as the Air Quality Index (AQI) surged to a hazardous ‘severe plus’ level of 484. The alarming pollution levels prompted the implementation of stricter pollution control measures across the capital.

The drive was led by Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva, who was joined by senior party leaders, including MLA Vijender Gupta, MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, MP Praveen Khandelwal, and other prominent BJP members. The distribution aimed to protect commuters from the toxic air and raise awareness about the ongoing pollution crisis.

Sachdeva slammed the AAP government for its handling of Delhi’s air quality issues, accusing Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s administration of failing to take effective action over the past decade. “If anyone is responsible for bringing Delhi to such a terrible state, it is the Kejriwal government. They have not shown seriousness about pollution in the past ten years,” he said.

The AAP did not provide an immediate response to the BJP’s accusations.

The BJP president stressed that pollution in Delhi is a year-round issue that demands long-term solutions rather than sporadic, reactive measures. Sachdeva also raised concerns over the effectiveness of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) stages 1, 2, and 3, pointing out that despite the enforcement of these measures, pollution levels continue to rise. “This situation reflects the incompetence of the AAP government,” he added.

South Delhi MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri also criticized the AAP government, particularly for the state of the city’s public transport system. “We have consistently raised this issue inside and outside the Delhi Assembly. The public transport system has completely collapsed, whether under Kejriwal’s leadership or now under Atishi’s. An improved public transport network could reduce the reliance on private vehicles, which are major contributors to air pollution,” Bidhuri stated.

The severe pollution on Monday morning led to a significant drop in visibility, prompting authorities to introduce tougher pollution control measures, such as a ban on truck entry and the suspension of construction activities at public sites.
