Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday addressed the opening session of the G20 Summit on the theme of “Social Inclusion and the Fight Against Hunger and Poverty.”

The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for hosting the summit and extending gracious hospitality to the leaders.
He commended Brazil’s G20 agenda, which is centered around the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emphasizing the importance of focusing on the concerns of the Global South while building upon the people-centric decisions made during the New Delhi G20 Summit.

PM Modi reinforced the Indian G20 presidency’s vision of “One Earth, One Family, One Future,” noting that it continued to resonate through the Rio discussions.

In his address, the Prime Minister outlined India’s significant strides in combating hunger and poverty. He shared that over the past decade, India had successfully lifted 250 million people out of poverty. Additionally, India is providing free food grains to over 800 million citizens as part of its effort to ensure food security for all. He highlighted India’s approach to tackling food security, based on the philosophy of ‘Back to Basics and March to Future,’ which has led to positive outcomes.

PM Modi also emphasized the importance of empowering women in the fight against poverty, detailing India’s focus on women-led development initiatives.

Furthermore, he extended India’s support to global efforts to combat hunger, particularly in Africa, and welcomed Brazil’s initiative to establish a Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty. He stressed that the Global South, heavily impacted by crises in food, fuel, and fertilizers due to ongoing conflicts, must be given priority attention in international discussions on these issues.

The Prime Minister’s address at the G20 Summit underscored India’s commitment to addressing global challenges and contributing to a more inclusive, equitable world.
