Palakkad, 20th Nov. The Palakkad assembly by-election witnessed brisk voting on Wednesday, with a voter turnout of 20.50% reported by 10:30 AM, more than three hours after polling began. The turnout had gradually increased from a mere 1.11% at 8 AM to 6.76% by 8:30 AM and reached 13.63% by 9:30 AM, according to the Election Commission.
Voters began arriving early at the 184 polling stations across the constituency, which has a total of 1.9 lakh eligible voters. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of Congress leader Shafi Parambil, following his election to the Lok Sabha.
The contest sees key contenders, including Rahul Mamkootathil from the Congress-led UDF, C. Krishnakumar of the BJP-led NDA, and P. Sarin, representing the CPI(M)-led LDF. Sarin, previously a member of Congress, was expelled after criticizing the party’s decision to field Mamkootathil for the bypoll.
Polling is being conducted amid tight security arrangements, including the deployment of central forces and live monitoring through an extensive webcasting system. The by-election holds significant political importance for the Congress-led UDF, as retaining the seat is crucial for their position in the state.
