Chandigarh, 20th Nov. A voter turnout of 20.76% was recorded by 11 am in the bypolls for four Punjab assembly segments on Wednesday, officials reported. Polling, which began at 7 am, is scheduled to continue until 6 pm. The bypolls are being held for the Gidderbaha, Dera Baba Nanak, Chabbewal (SC), and Barnala constituencies, which became vacant after the sitting legislators were elected to the Lok Sabha.
Voter participation varied across the constituencies, with Gidderbaha seeing 35% turnout, Dera Baba Nanak 19.4%, Barnala 16.1%, and Chabbewal 12.71%. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann urged citizens to exercise their right to vote, emphasizing the importance of fulfilling their civic duty for the future of Punjab. He encouraged voters to cast their ballots in line with their own will, recalling the vision of Baba Sahib and the sacrifices of martyrs.
Prominent political figures including Sangrur MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, BJP candidates Kewal Singh Dhillon (Barnala) and Sohan Singh Thandal (Chabbewal), Congress candidates Jatinder Kaur (Dera Baba Nanak) and Kuldeep Singh Dhillon (Barnala), along with other local leaders, were seen casting their votes early in the day.
The bypolls see a total of 45 candidates, including three women, competing for the vacant seats. Key contestants include Manpreet Singh Badal, Kewal Singh Dhillon, Sohan Singh Thandal, Amrita Warring, and Jatinder Kaur among others. Notably, the Shiromani Akali Dal has opted not to participate in these elections, following internal party issues.
With 6.96 lakh voters, including 3.31 lakh women, eligible to vote across 831 polling stations, the bypolls are critical in shaping the political landscape of Punjab, where the AAP holds a majority with 91 seats in the 117-member assembly.
