Imphal, 21st Nov. Amid rising violence in Manipur, eight companies of the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) arrived in Imphal on Wednesday to reinforce security in sensitive and fringe areas of the state, according to officials. This deployment follows the arrival of 11 CAPF companies a day earlier, bringing additional resources to the troubled region.
The newly arrived forces include four companies each from the CRPF and BSF, with one CRPF company comprising personnel from the Mahila Battalion.
The central government recently announced the deployment of 50 fresh CAPF companies to Manipur amid escalating ethnic tensions and violent incidents.
Last week, political offices belonging to the BJP and Congress were vandalized in the Jiribam district. Mobs also set fire to the residences of three BJP legislators, including a senior minister, and a Congress MLA in Imphal Valley, which remains under an indefinite curfew.
Security forces thwarted an attempt by agitators to storm the ancestral home of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh last Saturday evening, reflecting the tense situation.
The violence intensified following the disappearance of three women and three children from the Meitei community after a clash between security forces and suspected Kuki-Zo militants in Jiribam on November 11. The clash resulted in the deaths of 10 insurgents. The bodies of the missing six individuals were discovered over the past few days, exacerbating tensions.
Since May 2023, ethnic violence between the valley-based Meitei community and the hill-based Kuki-Zo groups has claimed over 220 lives and displaced thousands of residents across the state.
