Speculation is intensifying across administrative and policing circles in West Bengal over the possible return of senior IPS officer and current DG BSF, Praveen Kumar, to his parent West Bengal cadre.
According to informed sources in the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Praveen Kumar may return to West Bengal either shortly or following the retirement of the current Director General of Police, Siddhanath Gupta. The development has triggered widespread discussions in bureaucratic, political, and security establishments regarding the future leadership of the West Bengal Police.
Known for his strong operational background, disciplined administrative approach, and extensive experience in border management and internal security, Praveen Kumar has earned a reputation as a tough yet professional officer during his tenure in various strategic assignments.
His current role as Director General of the Border Security Force (BSF) has placed him at the forefront of India’s border security architecture, particularly along sensitive eastern frontiers adjoining Bangladesh — a region of immense strategic importance for West Bengal.
Observers believe that if appointed as West Bengal DGP, his experience in intelligence coordination, border security management, anti-smuggling operations, and law-and-order governance could significantly influence the state’s policing and security framework.
The possibility also gains significance at a time when issues related to border infiltration, cybercrime, communal sensitivity, organized crime, and political violence continue to remain major administrative concerns in the state.
While there has been no official confirmation either from the Government of West Bengal or the Ministry of Home Affairs, administrative circles believe that the coming months could witness important developments in the state’s top policing leadership structure.
