Georgetown, 22nd Nov. Prime Minister Narendra Modi held comprehensive discussions with the President of Guyana, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, at the State House in Georgetown on November 20. Upon his arrival, Prime Minister Modi was accorded a ceremonial guard of honour by President Ali.
The meeting began with a restricted session between the leaders, followed by delegation-level talks. Highlighting the historic ties between the two nations, PM Modi emphasized that his visit would further bolster bilateral relations. The discussions covered a range of topics, including defense, trade, investment, healthcare, traditional medicine, food security, infrastructure development, digital public infrastructure, cultural exchanges, and capacity-building initiatives.
The leaders also explored opportunities to deepen collaboration in energy, particularly in hydrocarbons and renewable energy. Development cooperation emerged as a key aspect of the partnership, with PM Modi reaffirming India’s commitment to supporting Guyana’s growth aspirations.
Regional and global issues, including climate change, featured prominently in the talks. PM Modi expressed gratitude to President Ali for Guyana’s participation in India-hosted Voice of the Global South summits. Both leaders emphasized the need for enhanced cooperation among Global South countries.
The visit also witnessed the signing of ten Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) and a shared commitment to hold regular high-level meetings to further strengthen bilateral ties.
