The Congress party on Friday retaliated against BJP president JP Nadda’s allegations, accusing the opposition of pushing a politically motivated narrative regarding the ongoing unrest in Manipur. Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh called Nadda’s letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge a “4D exercise—denial, distortion, distraction, and defamation.”

Nadda had earlier accused Congress of presenting a false narrative on the Manipur violence, in response to Kharge’s letter to President Droupadi Murmu seeking intervention in the crisis. Kharge had highlighted the Centre’s failure to defuse the situation, which has seen escalating violence since May 2023 between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, resulting in over 220 deaths.

In his rejoinder, Nadda claimed that Congress’s failure in addressing local issues when it was in power was still contributing to the unrest. “What is shocking is how repeated attempts are being made by the Congress party to sensationalise the situation in Manipur,” Nadda stated, also criticizing the Congress for its past handling of issues related to illegal migration.

In response, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh hit out at Nadda, saying the party was merely trying to deflect attention from the core issues at hand. He raised four key questions regarding the ongoing crisis, asking when Prime Minister Modi would visit the state, when Chief Minister N. Biren Singh would step down given the lack of support from the majority of MLAs, when a full-time governor would be appointed, and when Union Home Minister Amit Shah would take responsibility for his handling of the situation.

Ramesh stressed that the people of Manipur were yearning for peace and were questioning the government’s inaction. The Congress continues to criticize the Centre’s response to the ethnic violence that has left thousands displaced and deeply affected the northeastern state.
