Wayanad, 23rd November. In a stunning electoral debut, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is poised to outperform her brother Rahul Gandhi by leaps and bounds in Kerala’s Wayanad bypolls. As of the latest count, Priyanka Gandhi has secured 6,17,942 votes, leading her closest rival, Communist Party of India (CPI) candidate Sathyan Mokeri, by a margin exceeding 4 lakh votes. The BJP’s Navya Haridas is trailing with just about one lakh votes.
The Wayanad seat, which was previously held by Rahul Gandhi, has drawn significant attention as Priyanka Gandhi stepped into the race for the first time. Early projections suggest that Priyanka could secure nearly six lakh of the 9.52 lakh votes cast, far surpassing expectations. Local Congress leaders have predicted a landslide victory, with the Left Democratic Front’s Mokeri likely to receive about two lakh votes, while Haridas is expected to garner only a fraction of the total votes.
Commenting on the early trends, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy expressed his excitement, tweeting, “An amazing first trend on counting day is the massive early lead for our leader @priyankagandhi ji in Wayanad, Kerala, by-election. People of Wayanad are surely going to record victory margins today, and Priyanka ji will make her Parliamentary debut with a grand win.”
The bypoll was necessitated after Rahul Gandhi vacated the seat following his victory in Raebareli in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. While Rahul’s victory in Wayanad was a significant one, securing 6,47,445 votes with a margin of 3,64,422, Priyanka’s commanding lead in her electoral debut is set to make a bold statement ahead of the 2024 general elections.
As the final results are expected later in the day, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is all set to make her Parliamentary debut with what is expected to be a grand victory, cementing her place in the political landscape of India.
