Sambhal, 25th Nov. The district administration in Sambhal has imposed prohibitory orders and barred outsiders’ entry until November 30 following violence that left three men dead and several others, including security personnel, injured. The unrest stemmed from protests against a court-ordered survey of the Jama Masjid, a Mughal-era mosque.
District Magistrate Rajender Pensiya stated that the order was issued under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and prohibits entry without prior permission. Violators face action under Section 223 of the BNS. Internet services were suspended, and schools were closed on Monday to curb further tensions.
Violence erupted on Sunday as protesters clashed with security personnel, pelting stones and torching vehicles. Security forces used tear gas and batons to disperse the crowd. Three fatalities, identified as Naeem, Bilal, and Nauman, all aged 25, were confirmed, with two deaths attributed to bullet wounds from country-made pistols.
Divisional Commissioner Aunjaneya Kumar Singh revealed that gunshots from miscreants injured multiple officials, including a PRO, a circle officer, and several security personnel. Twenty-one individuals have been detained, and authorities have invoked the National Security Act against those involved.
The controversy began on November 19 when a court-ordered survey was conducted at the mosque based on a petition alleging the site once housed a Harihar temple demolished in 1529. The survey was postponed to Sunday to avoid interference with prayers, but tensions escalated, leading to violence.
Petitioner Vishnu Shankar Jain urged the Archaeological Survey of India to take control of the disputed site, while local lawyer Gopal Sharma reiterated claims about the site’s history. As investigations continue, officials are focused on restoring peace and completing the survey.
