Sambalpur, 27th Nov. A newborn baby was allegedly stolen from the state-run VIMSAR hospital in Odisha’s Sambalpur district on Tuesday, police reported. The baby boy was born to a couple from Mahasamund district, Chhattisgarh, on Monday. The theft occurred in the afternoon when the parents were out for a stroll, leaving the baby in the care of a family member.
The baby’s maternal aunt informed the police that she had handed the infant to a woman who had been sitting near their bed earlier. CCTV footage revealed an unidentified woman leaving the hospital premises with the baby.
“We have formed four teams to trace the suspect. All check gates have been alerted, and we are inspecting buses and trains,” said Additional SP Haresh Chandra Pande.
The baby’s mother mentioned that an unfamiliar woman had frequently approached her bed, inquiring about her health.
VIMSAR Director Bhabagrahi Rath expressed optimism about locating the baby and urged patients to avoid interacting with strangers near their beds. The police are continuing their search operation, aiming to reunite the newborn with the family.
