Kochi, 27th Nov. The Kerala High Court on Wednesday instructed the investigation officer looking into the death of Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Naveen Babu to submit the case diary along with a detailed affidavit outlining the progress of the inquiry by December 6. This directive followed a plea from Babu’s widow, seeking to transfer the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The court issued a notice to the CBI while considering the petition. Babu’s widow argued that the investigation was not progressing as expected, expressing concerns that political influence, particularly from former Kannur District Panchayat President P.P. Divya, might interfere with the inquiry. She further alleged that the investigation could be sabotaged due to Divya’s political connections.
Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas questioned the widow on her claim that the death was a murder, seeking clarification on whether there were any additional grounds to substantiate this assertion, other than the accused’s political affiliations.
Babu, who had allegedly died by suicide, was criticized by Divya during a farewell function on October 14, where she raised corruption allegations against him. The following day, Babu was found dead at his quarters in Kannur. Divya, who was accused of abetting his suicide, was arrested on October 29 after her anticipatory bail was rejected, though she was granted regular bail on November 8.
The petitioner’s plea highlighted the lack of meaningful progress in the investigation and suggested that a homicidal hanging could not be ruled out. The Kerala High Court has deferred the matter for a further hearing on December 6.
