New Delhi, 27th Nov. BJP lawmakers in the West Bengal Assembly staged a walkout on Wednesday in protest after they were not allowed to read out the contents of an adjournment motion concerning the protection of women and children in the state.
The motion, brought by BJP members Tapasi Mondal and others, aimed to address growing concerns about the safety and security of women and children in West Bengal. However, Speaker Biman Banerjee disallowed the motion but allowed its edited version to be read out.
As BJP MLA Tapasi Mondal began reading the motion, which included parts the Speaker had not permitted, the Speaker interrupted, stating that these portions would not be included in the Assembly’s official record.
In response, BJP chief whip Shankar Ghosh spoke to reporters outside the Assembly, claiming that Mondal’s microphone was switched off during her reading. Ghosh expressed the party’s displeasure, stating that the walkout was a protest against the Speaker’s actions. He emphasized that the motion was brought to highlight serious issues such as the rape and murder of an on-duty doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, as well as other crimes against women in the state.
