Ajmer, 28th Nov. A local court in Ajmer has issued notices in response to a civil suit claiming that a Shiva temple exists within the premises of the dargah of Sufi saint Moinuddin Chishti. The development has drawn sharp reactions, including concerns raised by Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal.
The suit, filed in September, seeks directions to declare the Ajmer dargah as the Sankat Mochan Mahadev Temple and demands a survey by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Notices were sent to the Ajmer Dargah Committee, the Ministry of Minority Affairs, and the ASI’s New Delhi office. The next hearing is scheduled for December 20, according to advocate Yogesh Siroja.
Plaintiff Vishnu Gupta stated, “We demand that Hindus be allowed to worship at the temple, and any registration of the dargah should be revoked after proper verification.”
Responding to the legal action, Kapil Sibal posted on X, calling the claim “worrisome.” He added, “Where are we taking this country? And why? For political dividends!”
This case follows recent tensions in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, where violence erupted during a court-ordered survey of a mosque alleged to have been built over a demolished temple. The incident resulted in four deaths and multiple injuries.
