New Delhi, 28th Nov. Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned till 12 noon on Thursday after Opposition members, including Congress and Samajwadi Party leaders, staged protests over several issues, including the Adani controversy and the recent violence in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh.
The session began with Congress leaders Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, elected from Kerala’s Wayanad, and Ravindra Vasantrao Chavan, elected from Maharashtra’s Nanded, taking their oaths as newly elected MPs. However, shortly after, several Opposition members stood up to demand discussions on the allegations against the Adani Group and other issues.
As protests intensified, with some Opposition members standing in the Well of the House and shouting slogans, Speaker Om Birla urged the members to allow the Question Hour to proceed. He reminded them that they had been given ample opportunities to raise their concerns, but the disruption of proceedings was unacceptable. He further stated that issues should be raised in a dignified manner, as was done during the Constituent Assembly debates.
Amid the chaos, only one question was taken up before the Speaker decided to adjourn the proceedings until noon. Opposition members had demanded a discussion on the Adani Group allegations and the violence in Sambhal, where recent clashes had resulted in several deaths.
On Wednesday, the Adani Group clarified that neither Gautam Adani nor his nephew, Sagar Adani, had been charged with any violations of the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) in connection with the bribery case filed in New York.
