New Delhi, 29th Nov. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, urging immediate action on several critical issues, including rectifying the short-term farm loan limit, allocating ₹10,000 crore for infrastructure, and expediting clearances for the Mekedatu Balancing Reservoir and Kalasa Bandhuri projects.
The meeting, held at the Parliament complex, was attended by Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar, Energy Minister K.J. George, and Urban Development Minister Byrathi Suresh.
Siddaramaiah expressed concern over NABARD’s reduction of the state’s Short-Term Agricultural Credit Limit from ₹5,600 crore in 2023-24 to ₹2,340 crore in 2024-25, a 58% cut. He urged the Prime Minister to direct the Finance Ministry to restore the previous limit to ensure farmers have continued access to soft agricultural loans.
The CM also sought ₹5,300 crore for the Upper Bhadra Project, crucial for irrigating drought-prone central Karnataka. He pressed for approvals for the Mekedatu and Kalasa Bandhuri projects, vital for addressing the state’s water resource challenges.
Citing Bengaluru’s contribution as a global tech hub, Siddaramaiah called for special financial assistance for urban development and public transport. He also requested ₹10,000 crore for infrastructure projects in 13 emerging city corporations.
On fiscal matters, Siddaramaiah criticized the 15th Finance Commission for reducing Karnataka’s tax share by 1% and sought compensation grants, emphasizing that future commissions should avoid penalizing high tax-contributing states.
The CM also met Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to congratulate her on her election as MP from Wayanad.
