Kolkata, 30th Nov. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a chargesheet on Friday in connection with financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal, naming its former principal, Sandip Ghosh, as the prime accused. However, the Special CBI Court in Alipore deferred accepting the chargesheet due to the absence of required approval from the West Bengal government to proceed against state employees, officials said.
The chargesheet, spanning over 100 pages, implicates four others, including doctors Ashish Pandey and Biplab Singh, alongside Afsar Ali and Suman Hazra, who were arrested earlier for alleged involvement. Supporting evidence comprising at least 1,000 pages of documents was submitted as part of the investigation.
The chargesheet follows Ghosh’s arrest on September 2, roughly three months after the alleged financial mismanagement at the hospital drew national attention. Reports of tender manipulation in purchasing medical equipment over three years and Ghosh’s alleged facilitation of awarding contracts to close associates surfaced during the investigation.
The case gained further prominence after the death of an on-duty doctor in August, which prompted a suspension order against Ghosh and led to calls for a thorough inquiry.
In August, the Calcutta High Court directed the transfer of the probe from a state-constituted Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the CBI, following a petition by Dr. Akhtar Ali, a former deputy superintendent of the hospital. Ali alleged multiple financial malpractices during Ghosh’s tenure, including illegal sale of unclaimed corpses, trafficking of biomedical waste, and awarding tenders for personal gain.
The CBI is awaiting state government approval to proceed with the chargesheet against the accused state employees, while the case continues to draw scrutiny over its alleged irregularities.
