Patna, 4th Dec. During the 2023-24 period, Bihar saw 8,675 transgender individuals tested for HIV, with 70 testing positive for the virus. As of October 2024, 6,827 transgender individuals have been tested, with 38 confirmed cases of infection. In response, the government has been running awareness programs aimed at educating the transgender community.
Maharashtra Leads in AIDS Cases, Bihar Third
Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh top the list of states with the highest number of AIDS cases, with Bihar ranking third. However, Bihar has shown progress, reducing its HIV infection rate by 27% since 2010. Currently, the infection rate in Bihar stands at 0.17%, below the national average of 0.22%. The state government hopes to control the spread of the virus by 2030.
Growing Concern Over Youth HIV Infections
The increasing number of young individuals contracting HIV has become a major concern. Social media and peer influence are leading some youths astray, with some turning to substance abuse or engaging in unprotected sex, thus increasing their risk of infection. Manoj Kumar Sinha, Joint Director of the Bihar State AIDS Control Committee, said that various programs are being implemented to tackle the issue.
Promoting Equality and Awareness
To combat stigma, the government has emphasized the importance of treating HIV-positive individuals with respect and ensuring they have access to benefits. A recent state-level orientation program for district officers focused on HIV prevention and control laws, with special attention to the rights of those living with HIV.
“Awareness programs are being conducted across districts with positive results. We are hopeful that the government will control the spread of AIDS in the near future,” said Manoj Kumar Sinha.
Healthcare Experts Stress Awareness
Dr. Vinod Kumar, a healthcare professional, emphasized the need for increased awareness about HIV transmission. Apart from unsafe sexual practices, sharing needles or blades can also increase the risk of infection. He urges the public to adopt safe practices to avoid spreading the virus.
Symptoms of HIV/AIDS
HIV shows a range of symptoms including fever, chills, sore throat, muscle aches, rashes, night sweats, fatigue, joint pain, swollen glands, and weight loss. HIV gradually weakens the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to infections.
The state’s proactive efforts, along with educational campaigns and increased vigilance, are crucial in combating the spread of AIDS, especially among vulnerable populations such as transgenders and youth.
