Amritsar, 4th Dec. Former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal was shot at this morning while serving penance at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The attacker, identified as Narain Singh from Gurdaspur, was apprehended immediately by the Punjab Police. Badal, 62, narrowly escaped unscathed as he was shot at during the third day of his penance, which involved serving food, washing dishes, and cleaning shoes at gurdwaras.
The attack has been condemned across political lines. Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Naresh Gujral called the attack an extremist attempt with Khalistani connections, suggesting foreign involvement from countries like Pakistan, Canada, and the United States. He demanded an inquiry by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Congress Punjab unit chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for negligence, blaming the incident on poor law-and-order management. BJP’s Manjinder Singh Sirsa also condemned the attack, highlighting the breach of the Golden Temple’s sanctity.
AAP MP Raghav Chadha condemned the violence and praised the prompt action of the Punjab Police, who managed to arrest the attacker. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann lauded the police for preventing a major incident and pledged a thorough investigation.
The attacker, Narain Singh, is reportedly linked to the Khalistani terrorist group Babbar Khalsa. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the conspiracy behind the incident.
Badal’s penance was ordered by the Akal Takht as atonement for actions during his tenure as Deputy CM from 2007 to 2017. This incident highlights ongoing security concerns in Punjab, especially regarding extremist elements within the state.
