New Delhi, 4th Dec. Devendra Fadnavis is set to begin his third term as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra tomorrow, with the grand oath ceremony scheduled to take place at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan. The announcement comes after a prolonged period of suspense over the top leadership post, following the resounding victory of the BJP-led Mahayuti in the recent state elections. As the BJP’s choice for Chief Minister was finalised today, the party placed Fadnavis’ name before the newly elected legislators, sealing his selection and paving the way for his swearing-in ceremony.
The timing of this announcement is particularly significant, as the state’s political dynamics shifted rapidly following the BJP-led alliance’s overwhelming win in the 2024 elections. The Mahayuti coalition secured a commanding 230 out of the 288 Assembly seats, firmly establishing its dominance. Yet, despite the impressive electoral success, the question of leadership had remained unresolved. The Shiv Sena, led by Eknath Shinde, had hoped to retain the Chief Minister’s position, given its significant role in leading the alliance through the elections. However, the BJP’s strategy was clear—it sought to claim the top post this time, with the BJP winning 132 of the 148 seats it contested.
In a bid to put an end to the confusion, Fadnavis, accompanied by Shiv Sena’s Shinde and NCP leader Ajit Pawar, staked the claim to form the government before Maharashtra’s Governor, CP Radhakrishnan. In his address to the BJP’s legislature party, Fadnavis expressed gratitude for the support of the party’s 132 MLAs and hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his guidance. He emphasized that the ‘double engine’ government would usher in significant development for Maharashtra, crediting the Mahayuti’s victory to the Prime Minister’s unifying slogan, “ek hain to safe hain.”
This conclusion to the 11-day suspense is a crucial moment for Maharashtra’s political future. Following the election results, party leaders had made strong claims about the rightful claim to the Chief Minister’s position, particularly emphasizing Shinde’s leadership role in the alliance’s victory. Despite this, the BJP’s clear electoral mandate and its ability to command a majority, with support from the NCP, shifted the scales in Fadnavis’ favour.
For Fadnavis, this marks a major political comeback. His appointment will be seen as a reward for his strategic acumen and years of steady leadership within the BJP. Yet, this moment is also one of political pragmatism. While the Shiv Sena’s contribution to the Mahayuti’s triumph cannot be denied, the BJP’s consolidation of power means that the party now controls the narrative and the direction of Maharashtra’s future.
In the coming weeks, all eyes will be on how Fadnavis navigates the delicate balance of managing his coalition partners, particularly the Shiv Sena, whose leaders continue to stress the significance of their contributions.
