The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a petition seeking directions to the Centre and other authorities to clear blockades on highways in Punjab, where farmers have been staging protests. The petition, filed by a social activist from Punjab, sought immediate action to remove restrictions on the farmers’ protests and to ensure that national highways and railway tracks were not obstructed by the agitating farmers.
The farmers, organized under the banners of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, have been protesting at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13. This protest began after their march to Delhi was halted by security forces.
In early December, the farmers planned to march towards Delhi on December 6 but suspended their efforts after the police used tear gas to disperse the crowd. The ‘Dilli Chalo’ protest march resumed on December 8 but was again halted due to similar action from the police.
Despite these ongoing disruptions, the Supreme Court declined to intervene, ruling against the petition to remove the blockades. The farmers’ protest, now in its eleventh month, continues to affect the flow of traffic and transportation across the region.
