Thiruvananthapuram, 19th Dec. The Kerala High Court on Wednesday dismissed the appeals of Asha Lawrence and Sujatha Boban, daughters of veteran communist leader M M Lawrence, who sought to have their father’s mortal remains handed over to them instead of being given to the Government Medical College Hospital.
The bench, consisting of Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice S Manu, upheld the decision of the medical college, which had received consent from Lawrence’s son, M L Sajeevan, to donate his body for scientific study. The court cited the absence of any claim by the daughters regarding their father’s wish for cremation and affirmed that the medical college’s decision was in line with the Kerala Anatomy Act, 1957.
The court referred to the poem “Invictus” by William Ernest Henley, suggesting that even in death, others may have a say in one’s destiny. Asha Lawrence’s counsel stated plans to appeal the decision in the Supreme Court.
The case gained attention following a protest by Asha Lawrence at Ernakulam town hall in September when the mortal remains were kept for public homage.
