Yet, these aspirations come with a caveat—how far one goes in their pursuit and what they are willing to compromise along the way. This forms a test of morality, a framework that extends to every sphere of life, including politics. In the complex and power-driven world of Bharatiya politics, aspirations often intersect with ethical dilemmas. Nowhere is this more evident than in the dynamics of the I.N.D.I. (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) coalition, a united opposition front that aspired to dethrone the BJP-led government but now finds itself at a moral and political crossroads.
The Birth of I.N.D.I. Alliance: Unity in Aspiration
The I.N.D.I. alliance was conceived with a singular goal: to oust the BJP government, which had been in power for a decade. In a political environment marked by polarization, the coming together of Congress, AAP, SP, DMK, and others was seen as a historic moment. Their unity inspired hope for an alternative to the BJP’s dominance. This coalition’s efforts during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections paid off to some extent, as they managed to reduce the BJP’s seat tally and even improve Congress’s standing. Congress also witnessed a resurgence, raising its tally to 99 seats. However, the cracks in their foundation began to surface soon after the elections.
The Post-Election Landscape: From Unity to Discord
Following the 2024 elections, the alliance boasted of weakening the BJP’s grip on power. Their narrative centered on reducing the BJP to a “lame duck” government and their ability to mount significant resistance in Parliament. However, these claims quickly unraveled. Key government bills, such as the Waqf Amendment Bill and the controversial One Nation, One Election Bill (ONOE), were passed with little resistance from the opposition. Instead of demonstrating strength, the opposition revealed its disarray, with individual parties prioritizing their interests over collective action.
Leadership Battles and Internal Rivalries
A significant challenge for the I.N.D.I. alliance lies in its lack of cohesive leadership. TMC chief Mamata Banerjee’s assertion that she was the architect of the alliance and deserved to lead it created internal friction. This statement found support from some parties but alienated others, particularly Congress. These power struggles exposed the fragile nature of the alliance, which, months after its formation, still struggles to identify a unified leader. This leadership vacuum has hampered its ability to present a credible challenge to the BJP.
The Adani Row and Selective Solidarity
One of the most telling moments of discord within the I.N.D.I. alliance was its handling of the Adani controversy. Congress’s aggressive campaign against the Adani Group, sparked by the Hindenburg report’s allegations, did not find universal support within the bloc. Key allies like the TMC and SP distanced themselves from the issue, with the TMC categorically stating it was not their concern. This divergence was a major blow to Congress, which found itself isolated despite being the largest party in the alliance. For the TMC, this stance was particularly significant, as its own MP, Mahua Moitra, had been a vocal critic of Adani.
Congress: Ally or Liability?
For many regional parties in the I.N.D.I. alliance, Congress is both a necessary partner and a strategic competitor. While Congress’s presence adds weight to the alliance, its dominance often comes at the expense of regional players. In Maharashtra, for instance, the Congress gained the most from the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, even as its regional partners suffered. Similarly, in Haryana, Congress refused to share seats with AAP, leading to tensions between the two parties. AAP’s leader, Arvind Kejriwal, later retaliated by refusing to ally with Congress in Delhi.
Regional Aspirations vs. National Goals
The friction between Congress and regional parties stems from conflicting aspirations. Regional leaders like Akhilesh Yadav of SP and Uddhav Thackeray of Shiv Sena perceive Congress as a threat to their influence in state politics. Akhilesh Yadav’s comment labeling Congress as a “chalu party” (cunning party) reflects this mistrust. Similarly, in Maharashtra, SP distanced itself from the MVA alliance, citing ideological differences and a lack of focus on regional issues.
EVM Debate: A New Low in Opposition Unity
The controversy over Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) further highlighted the divisions within the alliance. Congress’s allegations of EVM tampering were publicly challenged by its ally, National Conference (NC) leader Omar Abdullah. Abdullah dismissed Congress’s claims, emphasizing that electoral outcomes are determined by voters, not machines. His statement exposed the lack of coherence in the alliance’s messaging and the growing skepticism among its partners about Congress’s narrative.
The Long Shadow of 2029
As the dust settles on the 2024 elections, the future of the I.N.D.I. alliance looks increasingly uncertain. While the coalition may regroup ahead of the 2029 general elections, the underlying tensions remain unresolved. Regional parties are acutely aware that their aspirations for greater influence are hindered by Congress’s dominance. This dynamic raises the question of whether the alliance can present a united front or whether it will collapse under the weight of its internal contradictions.
Conclusion: Aspirations Without Unity Are Futile
The I.N.D.I. alliance’s journey underscores a critical truth about political aspirations—they must be grounded in genuine unity and shared purpose to succeed. The alliance’s initial promise has been undermined by infighting, selective solidarity, and conflicting goals. For the opposition to mount a credible challenge to the BJP in the future, it must address these issues and rebuild trust among its members. Without a cohesive strategy and strong leadership, aspirations will remain just that—aspirations, with no meaningful impact on the political landscape.
As the I.N.D.I. alliance struggles to maintain relevance, it serves as a reminder of the importance of integrity and collaboration in politics. Aspirations that compromise morality and unity ultimately lead to failure, leaving both politicians and citizens disillusioned.
