The Uttar Pradesh government is all set to modernize the Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj, ensuring the age-old trope of lost loved ones amidst sprawling crowds becomes a thing of the past. With cutting-edge technology and meticulous planning, the upcoming Kumbh Mela promises a safer, more organized, and seamless experience for an anticipated 10 crore pilgrims.
The days of dramatic separations depicted in Bollywood classics like Taqdeer and Mela are over. The Prayagraj Mela Authority, in collaboration with the Police Department, is introducing an advanced digital lost-and-found system, or “Khoya-Paya Centers.” These centers will use AI-driven surveillance, social media integration, and rapid registration systems to reunite separated families quickly and efficiently.
A High-Tech Transformation for the Iconic Mela
The new Khoya-Paya centers will digitally record details of missing persons and instantly share them across platforms such as Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and local databases. Regular public announcements and trained personnel will assist in managing reunions, eliminating the prolonged anxiety previously associated with such incidents.
“Instead of worrying about losing loved ones, pilgrims can focus on the spiritual journey. Technology will ensure their safety and redefine the Kumbh experience,” a senior government official stated.
Vulnerable groups, especially women and children, are receiving special attention. Those claiming a lost person will need to provide verifiable identification, with police intervention available in suspicious cases. This precaution addresses concerns portrayed in cinema, where lost individuals are sometimes shown falling into the wrong hands.
AI-Powered Security: A First for Maha Kumbh
For the first time, Prayagraj Railway Division will deploy AI-powered face recognition (FR) cameras alongside a robust network of 650 CCTV cameras. These systems will monitor railway stations and other crowded areas, identifying suspicious activities and preventing potential security risks.
“With nearly 10 crore devotees traveling by train, robust security arrangements are critical,” said Amit Singh, PRO of Prayagraj Railway Division. “Face recognition cameras will ensure swift detection of anomalies, enabling immediate action to safeguard the pilgrims.”
The surveillance systems, covering platforms, entry points, and shelters, will be fully operational by January 2025. Together with on-ground police deployments, these measures aim to eliminate the risks associated with large gatherings.
A Safer and More Memorable Mela
In the event a missing person is unclaimed for 12 hours, authorities will step in to provide temporary shelter and care. This structured approach replaces the dramatized chaos often associated with the Kumbh with a reality rooted in safety and efficiency.
Senior police officer Rajesg Dwivedi emphasized the significance of the changes: “The Maha Kumbh 2025 will be remembered not for chaos but for its impeccable organization and safety measures. Pilgrims can now embark on a spiritually enriching journey, free from fear of separation or mishap.”
