Sambhal, 26th Dec. The district administration on Thursday initiated the renovation and excavation of the ancient “Mrityu Kup” (Well of Death) in Kot Purvi, located within the Sambhal Kotwali police station area. This effort is part of a broader initiative aimed at restoring and preserving wells of significant religious and spiritual value.

Locals say the well, which had been abandoned for several years and filled with debris, holds great religious importance. It is believed that bathing in the well can grant devotees salvation. According to Gagan Varshney, a local councillor, “The excavation of Mrityu Kup, a revered and ancient site, is an important step. With the help of Nagar Palika, this renovation will not only restore the site but will also strengthen our faith.”

The restoration of the well is expected to boost Sambhal’s religious tourism prospects, adding to the area’s cultural and spiritual heritage. The site is located near the Shahi Jama Masjid, which has been at the center of recent tensions. Last month, clashes broke out during a survey of the mosque, leading to violence that resulted in four fatalities. Security forces were targeted, with vehicles set ablaze and stones thrown at police.

The violent incident, which saw numerous injuries among security personnel, led to the suspension of internet services in the district. Despite these tensions, officials remain hopeful that the renovation of Mrityu Kup will contribute to the area’s spiritual and cultural revival.

In addition, the renovation project comes amid ongoing disputes related to the historical significance of sites in the area, including the Shahi Jama Masjid, which has been the subject of court-ordered surveys following claims about its historical origins.
