Lucknow, 27th Dec. The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has announced a seven-day state mourning to honor the demise of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. During this period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast, and all government entertainment programs will remain canceled. The state mourning will continue from December 26, 2024, to January 1, 2025.
Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday night at Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Reports suggest his last rites may be performed on Sunday.
A renowned economist, Dr. Singh is credited with spearheading India’s economic liberalization during his tenure as Finance Minister in 1991. He served as Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014. On Thursday evening, following a sudden health deterioration, Dr. Singh was admitted to AIIMS. Despite the doctors’ efforts, he was declared dead at 9:51 PM.
Upon hearing the news of his demise, the central government declared seven days of national mourning. In line with this, the Uttar Pradesh government has followed suit.
Dr. Singh’s illustrious career included roles as Economic Advisor to the Ministry of Finance, Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, and Vice-Chairman and Chairman of the Planning Commission. He is regarded as the architect of India’s economic reforms and globalization initiatives, which transformed the nation’s economic landscape.
The state joins the nation in mourning the loss of a visionary leader and statesman who left an indelible mark on India’s economic history.
