Bengaluru, 8th Jan. The BJP in Karnataka on Tuesday raised concerns over the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), which has reportedly caused significant health issues in China, and urged the state government not to take the virus lightly.
Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, R. Ashoka, called for immediate measures to assess oxygen availability and ICU readiness in government hospitals following reports of two children testing positive for the virus in Bengaluru.
Speaking to reporters, Ashoka criticized the Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao’s statement urging calm, arguing that public awareness about HMPV is limited. “No virus should be underestimated, especially when it attacks the lungs,” Ashoka emphasized.
The BJP leader highlighted that HMPV originated in China, where reports suggest severe impacts, including child hospitalizations and fatalities. He noted that the Centre has already cautioned states against the virus.
Ashoka stressed the need for preparedness, citing the importance of functioning oxygen storage and enhanced ICU capacity. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, measures for oxygen storage were implemented. It is critical to audit and ensure these facilities remain operational,” he said.
Refuting claims that the virus primarily affects children, Ashoka stated that it also poses a threat to individuals above 60 years of age and those with pre-existing respiratory issues.
“Proactive measures are essential. Health officials need to be briefed on handling the situation, and an audit of hospital facilities is urgently required,” Ashoka added.
The BJP’s appeal comes as the state government continues to monitor the situation, aiming to prevent potential health crises.
