Prayagraj, 14th Jan. Millions gathered at the Maha Kumbh 2025 on Tuesday to take part in the sacred Amrit Snan, but one devotee stood out—Taramati, an octogenarian from Jharkhand’s Dhanbad. Having attended the religious festival since 1945, Taramati made the journey to Prayagraj on her own, defying her age and health issues.
At 80, Taramati said she boarded a train at 10 pm and reached Prayagraj within 11-12 hours. “No one can separate me from God, not even my family,” she told NDTV, explaining that her son simply accepts her independent spirit, saying, “She feels like going, toh nikal jaati hai (so she leaves).”
Despite having an issue with one of her legs, Taramati’s determination to attend the Maha Kumbh remains unshaken. The Amrit Snan, which took place on Makar Sankranti on January 14, was marked by the chanting of “Jai Shri Ram” and “Har Har Mahadev” as rose petals were showered on devotees.
The Maha Kumbh, one of the largest and most significant religious gatherings in the world, is being held in Prayagraj this year. The festival, which takes place every 12 years, will continue until February 26, 2025. Key “snan” dates include January 14 (Makar Sankranti), January 29 (Mauni Amavasya), February 3 (Basant Panchami), February 12 (Maghi Purnima), and the final day on February 26 (Maha Shivaratri).
