Thane, 17th Jan. Police have arrested a 30-year-old man from Khagaria town in Bihar for allegedly cheating a Navi Mumbai resident out of over ₹14.88 crore in a share trading cyber fraud, an official said on Friday.
The accused, identified as Sujitkumar Madankumar Singh, was tracked and apprehended by the Navi Mumbai police’s Cyber Cell. Singh, who reportedly worked at call centers in Cambodia, is accused of duping Indian citizens through scams, according to Senior Inspector Gajanan Kadam of the Cyber Police Station.
Details of the Fraud
An FIR was registered under the provisions of the new criminal code BNS and the IT Act based on the complaint of the victim, who reported losing ₹14,88,91,665 in an online share trading scam between January and August 2024. The fraudsters lured the victim with promises of lucrative returns on share trading investments.
Police Investigation and Arrest
Following extensive technical and intelligence-led investigations, the Cyber Cell identified Singh as the prime suspect. A police team traveled to Khagaria, Bihar, and arrested him.
Links to Cambodia and Modus Operandi
During interrogation, police discovered Singh was in Cambodia from June 2023 to January 2024 and again from February to June 2024. While there, he worked in call centers involved in cyber fraud, primarily targeting Indians.
Inspector Kadam revealed that Singh sourced Indian SIM cards and supplied them to his associates in Cambodia. He was also an active participant in multiple Telegram groups, maintaining connections with individuals in Southeast Asia. Preliminary investigations suggest Singh was in contact with other accomplices in India as well.
The investigation is ongoing, with police seeking to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the fraud network.
