Guwahati, 6th Feb. The redeveloped kerbside at Terminal 1 (T1) of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport was officially inaugurated by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday. The inauguration ceremony was attended by various stakeholders from the LGBI Airport ecosystem, marking a significant milestone in the airport’s infrastructure development.
This upgrade is expected to offer passengers a safer, more secure, and memorable travel experience, according to a statement from the airport authorities. Several key enhancements have been made to elevate the overall passenger experience. The passenger movement area has expanded by 700 square meters to accommodate increasing passenger numbers. The number of departure gates has been increased from five to seven, which will help in reducing passenger wait times. These gates are equipped with 14 entry lanes.
Traffic flow has also been optimized, with new entry and exit points, alongside the implementation of FasTag technology at all points for streamlined access. A new pedestrian-friendly walking path with a zebra crossing has been constructed between the parking area and the terminal to ensure the safety of travelers.
In a bid to further improve the kerbside experience, LGBI Airport has created a traffic-free lane where the retail and F&B outlets have been specially curated. The outlets are designed to offer a vibrant shopping and dining experience 24/7, every day of the year.
One of the highlights of the redevelopment is a stunning moss wall, which adds a natural touch to the terminal’s ambiance, enhancing the overall aesthetic and creating a more pleasant environment for travelers. Additionally, 47 digital screens will be installed across the kerbside to showcase captivating visuals highlighting the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of Northeast India, with a particular focus on Assam. These screens will not only engage tourists but also serve as a platform to promote the region’s tourism and cultural exchange.
A spokesperson from Guwahati International Airport Limited (GIAL), which manages the airport, said, “The redeveloped terminal has been carefully designed with the passenger experience in mind. Our priority is to create a modern and efficient facility that caters to the evolving needs of air travelers. As the Gateway to the Northeast, the refurbished T1 will contribute to the region’s development in terms of economy, education, and job creation.”
GIAL, managed by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises, expressed its gratitude for the continued support from the Government of Assam, the Airports Authority of India, and all stakeholders involved in the project. The redevelopment is expected to accommodate the increasing footfall at the airport while ensuring secure and convenient travel experiences for all passengers.
