Mumbai, 13th Feb. The Maharashtra Cyber Cell has issued a second summons this week to YouTuber Samay Raina over the controversy surrounding podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia’s remarks on his YouTube show India’s Got Latent.
Raina, currently in the US, has informed authorities that he will return on March 17 and has requested additional time to respond. The controversy erupted after a viral clip from the show featured Allahbadia making an inappropriate comment about parental intimacy, sparking widespread outrage. Despite issuing an apology and calling it a “lapse in judgment,” Allahbadia continues to face backlash.
Raina has since removed all episodes of India’s Got Latent from YouTube and assured full cooperation with the probe. Meanwhile, Mumbai Police have recorded statements from seven individuals, including social media influencer Apoorva Makhija, and expect Allahbadia to appear for questioning soon. The Maharashtra Cyber Department has also summoned over 40 individuals, including past participants and judges of the show.
In addition, Guwahati Police have registered a case against Allahbadia and four others, sending a team to Mumbai for further investigation.
The controversy has reached Parliament, with Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske calling for stricter regulations on social media content. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis weighed in, emphasizing that while freedom of speech is important, it should not infringe upon societal norms.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has also summoned Allahbadia, Raina, Makhija, comedians Jaspreet Singh and Ashish Chanchlani, and the show’s producers Tushar Poojari and Saurabh Bothra to appear before it in New Delhi on February 17.
