New Delhi, 17th Feb. Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha met with Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh on February 16, 2025, to discuss several crucial matters pertaining to the state’s development. The discussions focused on improving weather forecasting capabilities, boosting Tripura’s bamboo industry, administrative matters, and enhancing connectivity between India and Bangladesh.

One of the primary issues raised by Dr. Saha was the need for advanced technology to address the state’s increased rainfall, which has exceeded 500 mm this year. In response, Dr. Jitendra Singh assured that the Ministry of Earth Sciences would establish a state-of-the-art weather radar in Tripura within a year. This radar, together with the existing Space research center, will significantly enhance the accuracy of real-time weather predictions, particularly concerning rainfall and cyclones, thereby strengthening disaster preparedness in the region.

Additionally, the meeting focused on the strategic development of Tripura’s bamboo industry. Dr. Singh highlighted that specialized institutes in Assam and Manipur, which focus on biotechnology and bamboo research, would collaborate with Tripura to explore the economic potential of bamboo. This partnership aims to develop industrial applications, create sustainable livelihoods, and contribute to the state’s economic growth.

Dr. Singh also addressed administrative concerns raised by the Chief Minister, including the placement of bureaucrats and officers in the state. He assured that discussions would be held with the relevant authorities to address these issues effectively.

A significant point of discussion was the establishment of Tripura’s first Government Dental College, a project close to Dr. Singh’s heart given his background as a dental professional. The new college is expected to bolster healthcare infrastructure and provide better educational opportunities for the state’s residents.

The meeting also highlighted the operationalization of the Agartala-Akhaura railway link, a project that Dr. Jitendra Singh had previously championed. The 12.24 km rail corridor, which links Tripura with Bangladesh, will strengthen India-Bangladesh connectivity, facilitate smoother trade, and enhance people-to-people exchanges. This improved connectivity is expected to open up new economic opportunities for Tripura and the wider Northeast region by providing a direct route to international markets.
