Amritsar, 17th Feb. The second batch of Indian nationals deported from the United States arrived at Amritsar Airport on February 15, sources confirmed. According to reports, women and children were not restrained on the deportation flight, as has been the case with other deportation flights.
In addition, the third batch of deported Indian nationals, who had allegedly migrated illegally to the US, also landed in Amritsar on Sunday. These deportations have raised concerns over the treatment of the deportees, particularly from Punjab.
On Saturday, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann assured the public that the deported individuals would be treated with respect and necessary arrangements would be made for their stay. He explained that they would remain in Amritsar for a few hours before being transported to their respective states, as their onward flights were already booked by the Ministry of External Affairs. “Our kids are the ones coming here, so from here, no one will go hungry. We have made all necessary arrangements, and they will stay here for a few hours before heading to their respective states,” CM Mann said.
However, earlier on Friday, CM Mann strongly criticized the central government for its handling of the deportation issue, accusing the Centre of orchestrating a campaign to defame Punjabis. He stated, “There is a conspiracy to defame Punjab and Punjabis. The first plane landed in Amritsar, and now the second one is arriving. The MEA must explain why Amritsar was chosen for this.”
The recent deportation flights have sparked controversy, as the first such flight landed in Amritsar on February 5, carrying Indian citizens who had allegedly migrated illegally to the United States.
In 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed India’s willingness to repatriate nationals living illegally in the US. He also emphasized the need to combat human trafficking, asserting that those misled into illegal migration were from ordinary families and victims of traffickers. “We should attack the entire system of human trafficking together, and India is ready to take back its nationals,” PM Modi had said during a press conference with US President Donald Trump.
