Coimbatore- Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday “apologised” for not being able to speak Tamil while addressing the Maha Shivratri celebrations at Isha Foundation in Coimbatore.
Amid the ongoing debate over the alleged imposition of Hindi in Tamil Nadu, Mr. Shah acknowledged Tamil as the “world’s oldest language” and extended his wishes for the festival.
Speaking at the event, he described Maha Shivratri as not just a festival but an occasion for “self-awakening.” He lauded Isha Foundation’s founder, Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, stating that the 112-foot Adiyogi Shiva statue represents the 112 ways of achieving spirituality.
The ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu has been vocal against the National Education Policy’s three-language mandate, terming it as “Hindi imposition.” Mr. Shah’s remarks come at a time when language politics remains a contentious issue in the state.
The Maha Shivratri celebrations at Isha Yoga Centre began at 6:00 PM on Wednesday and will continue until 6:00 AM on Thursday.
