New Delhi- Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Saturday announced that all high-rise buildings, hotels, commercial complexes, major establishments such as airports, and construction sites must install anti-smog guns to combat rising air pollution levels.
Emphasizing that Delhi must address its own pollution issues before seeking action from others, Sirsa directed departments to draft a comprehensive roadmap and gather data on pollution contributions from key sites, including Delhi Airport.
Chairing a high-level meeting with officials from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), Sirsa stressed the need for stringent pollution control measures and hinted at new legislative actions if required.
The MCD has been tasked with compiling a list of high-rise buildings, both existing and under construction, to enforce new pollution control norms. Different guidelines will be established for current structures and upcoming projects to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
The minister also revealed plans to transition all airport vehicles to green alternatives and urged major establishments to enhance greenery around their premises. “By 2026, Delhi will introduce at least 10,000 electric vehicles and significantly reduce landfill waste by developing parks and forests on cleaned landfill sites,” Sirsa stated.
Cloud seeding has been proposed as a potential solution to combat peak pollution months, with necessary permissions being expedited. Leading institutions such as IIT Delhi will be involved in research and pollution control efforts.
Environmental activist Bhavreen Kandhari welcomed pollution control initiatives but emphasized that the government must prioritize emissions reduction from industries, construction activities, and fossil fuel plants in the city. She added that while anti-smog guns and water sprinkling help, they are not comprehensive solutions.
Sirsa reiterated that 50% of Delhi’s pollution originates within the city, urging authorities to focus on internal solutions before holding external factors accountable.
