Bengaluru- A Bengaluru court has acquitted Goa Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte in a long-running case related to illegal iron ore mining and transportation, marking the conclusion of a high-profile legal battle that has drawn public and political attention for years.
Background of the Case
The case dates back to the early 2010s when allegations of widespread illegal mining surfaced in Goa. A 2012 government-backed inquiry led by retired judge M B Shah found that all 90 iron ore mines in the state were operating without proper environmental clearances. The report estimated losses exceeding USD 6 billion over five years due to illegal mining, leading authorities to order a complete suspension of mining operations in September 2012.
