New Delhi: The Delhi government is set to conduct artificial rain trials, pending the results of water sample tests, as part of a broader strategy to combat pollution across the city. Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa revealed the plan in an interview with PTI, emphasizing the government’s commitment to improving air quality through targeted interventions.
Sirsa explained that a study is underway to assess the potential side effects of chemicals used in artificial rain. “Based on the report, we’ll conduct a small-scale test in outer Delhi and analyze water samples. If no adverse effects are found, we’ll move forward with large-scale implementation,” he said.
The minister also acknowledged the failure of previous smog tower projects, promising a fresh plan that would target multiple pollution hotspots across Delhi-NCR. “Our focus is to address pollution sources directly and ensure visible improvements,” Sirsa added.
In a related move, the government has announced stricter vehicle pollution controls. From April 1, vehicles older than 15 years will be barred from refueling at petrol pumps in the capital. Sirsa confirmed that enforcement would be strengthened with technology, including emission monitoring devices at petrol stations to check Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates.
Additionally, all high-rise buildings, hotels, commercial complexes, airports, and major construction sites will be required to install anti-smog guns. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has been tasked with identifying structures that fall under this mandate.
With air quality in Delhi often plummeting to hazardous levels during winter, Sirsa assured that the BJP government, which recently assumed power after 26 years, is determined to tackle pollution and improve the city’s environment. “We’re committed to making Delhi cleaner and healthier,” he asserted.
