New Delhi, 22nd Oct. Delhi woke up to a thick layer of smog on Tuesday as the air quality index (AQI) plunged into the ‘very poor’ category, with 27 monitoring stations reporting critical levels, according to the Central Pollution Control Board. At 9 am, the city’s AQI was recorded at 317.
In response, authorities have enforced Stage II of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), which bans the use of coal and firewood, including tandoors in hotels and restaurants, and prohibits the use of diesel generator sets, except for essential services. Areas such as Mundka, Bawana, Wazirpur, Jahangirpuri, and Anand Vihar are among the worst affected.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 20.4°C on Tuesday morning, with humidity at 93%. The weather is expected to remain clear, with the maximum temperature likely to reach 35°C.
The air quality index categorizes levels as ‘good’ (0-50), ‘satisfactory’ (51-100), ‘moderate’ (101-200), ‘poor’ (201-300), ‘very poor’ (301-400), and ‘severe’ (401-500).
