New Delhi, 19th Dec. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to review the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, marking the first such meeting after the assembly elections held in September-October. The meeting will be attended by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, top Army officers, paramilitary forces, local administration officials, intelligence agencies, and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
The security review will focus on the prevailing situation in the Union Territory (UT), with particular attention to border areas. This marks Shah’s first meeting following the formation of a National Conference (NC) government, headed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, after the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories in 2019.
The Home Minister is expected to have a detailed discussion on the security roadmap for 2025 and possible measures to address recent terror incidents in the region, including the deadly attack in central Kashmir on October 20, where seven people were killed. Authorities will also assess ways to prevent such attacks in the future, particularly targeting outsiders working in the region.
The security review follows a decline in civilian casualties, with 14 civilians killed by November 2024, compared to 50 in 2019. The review will also consider the status of terrorist activity, with 142 terrorists killed in 2019 and 45 so far in 2024.
