Guwahati, 22nd Dec. In a continuing effort to combat child marriage, Assam has arrested 416 individuals in the third phase of its crackdown, announced Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday. The operation, which began on the night of December 21-22, has seen 335 cases filed against the accused.
The crackdown is part of Assam’s ongoing battle against child marriage, with the third phase marking a significant step in the state’s efforts. The arrested individuals will be produced in court on Sunday. Sarma emphasized the state’s commitment to taking “bold steps” to eradicate this social issue.
The state government had earlier initiated two phases of the crackdown, one in February 2023, resulting in 3,483 arrests and 4,515 cases, and the second in October 2023, which led to 915 arrests and 710 cases.
