Chennai, 3rd Dec. The Tamil Nadu BJP on Tuesday demanded that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin immediately sack V. Senthil Balaji from the state cabinet after the Supreme Court raised concerns over his reinstatement. BJP Vice President and spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy pointed out that the Supreme Court’s question about Balaji’s reappointment, soon after his bail in a money laundering case, was aimed at the Chief Minister.
“The question asked by the Supreme Court is not about Senthil Balaji, but about why Chief Minister Stalin reinstated him as a minister,” Thirupathy said in a post on ‘X’. He argued that as a responsible leader, Stalin should have waited for the resolution of the legal case before bringing Balaji back into the cabinet.
Balaji had been in jail for over 400 days in connection with the money laundering case involving the cash-for-job scam. The BJP leader further emphasized that the chief minister had previously criticized Balaji as corrupt when he was not in the DMK, and had even called for action against him. “Why has Stalin chosen to bring him back as a minister now?” Thirupathy questioned.
On Monday, the Supreme Court expressed concern about Balaji’s reinstatement just days after being granted bail, fearing it could influence witnesses in the ongoing case. The bench of Justices Abhay S. Oka and Augustine George Masih asked, “We granted you bail, and days after, you go and become minister. Anybody will be bound to be under the impression that now, with your position as a senior cabinet minister, witnesses will be under pressure. What is this going on?”
The BJP has called for immediate action from CM Stalin, urging him to heed the Supreme Court’s concerns and remove Balaji from the cabinet.
