New Delhi, 9th Dec. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Rahul Narwekar was elected unopposed as the Speaker of the 15th Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Monday, following his nomination the previous day. The opposition alliance, Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), chose not to contest the election, paving the way for Narwekar’s smooth re-election.
Narwekar, who had previously served as the Speaker of the 14th assembly for two and a half years, was re-elected from the Colaba assembly seat in Mumbai during the recent state elections. His election comes as the Maharashtra government prepares for a floor test to demonstrate its strength in the assembly, followed by Governor CP Radhakrishnan’s address to the joint session of both Houses of the state legislature.
Rahul Narwekar made significant rulings in his earlier term as Speaker, including recognizing the faction led by Eknath Shinde as the legitimate Shiv Sena following a split in the party. He also ruled that the faction under Ajit Pawar represented the true Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), founded by Sharad Pawar.
In the recent Maharashtra assembly elections, the Mahayuti coalition, consisting of BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP, won a landslide victory with over 230 seats in the 288-member legislature. The MVA, in contrast, secured only 46 seats. The current composition of the assembly is as follows:
- Mahayuti: BJP – 132 MLAs; Shiv Sena – 57; NCP – 41; Other parties and Independents – 8
- Opposition: Shiv Sena (UBT) – 20 MLAs; Congress – 16; NCP (SP) – 10; Other parties – 5
On December 5, Devendra Fadnavis of the BJP took oath as Chief Minister, with Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar sworn in as his deputies, after lengthy negotiations on the allocation of ministerial positions in the new Maharashtra government.
