Chennai, Tamil Nadu, 9th Feb. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has achieved a historic victory in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, securing 48 out of 70 seats and making a resounding return to power in the national capital after 27 years. The party’s triumph was marked by the defeat of several key Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders, including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who lost to BJP’s Parvesh Verma in his own stronghold.
BJP leader Tamilisai Soundarajan hailed the party’s sweeping victory, calling it a reflection of the people’s faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s governance. “After a quarter century, we are able to win Delhi elections. I thank our Prime Minister for his good governance and for giving the people hope that the same good governance would be delivered to Delhi also,” Soundarajan told ANI on Saturday.
The BJP leader also expressed confidence that the results signified the “exit” of Arvind Kejriwal from the political scene. “As exit polls predicted, it is an exit for Kejriwal, and this will lead to a split in the INDI alliance. Even DMK should be worried because they are unable to contest unitedly,” she added. She also pointed out the contrast between the 2008 results, when Congress had secured 40 percent of the vote share, and the current situation, where Congress registered a “hat-trick zero” in the latest elections.
The BJP’s victory was a significant blow to the ruling AAP, which had dominated Delhi politics in recent years. In the previous two assembly elections (2015 and 2020), AAP had won a commanding 67 and 62 seats respectively. However, this time, AAP suffered heavy losses, with its seat count drastically reduced and Kejriwal losing the prestigious New Delhi seat to BJP’s Parvesh Verma.
BJP’s resounding success was further highlighted by the fact that the Congress, which ruled Delhi for 15 years until 1998, failed to secure any seats once again. This marks the third consecutive Delhi Assembly election in which Congress has failed to open its account, reinforcing the party’s declining influence in the capital.
The BJP’s two-thirds majority in Delhi has bolstered its national dominance, following a string of successful electoral outcomes, including the Maharashtra and Haryana elections earlier. With this victory, the BJP is poised to strengthen its foothold in the national capital, while the AAP and Congress are left grappling with the fallout.
Tamilisai Soundarajan concluded, “We are really happy about our victory, and this is a reflection of the people’s trust in BJP and its leadership.”
The vote counting process was held on Saturday morning after polling took place on February 5, 2025.
