Hyderabad- A major breakthrough was achieved in the ongoing rescue operation at the partially collapsed Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel, where eight workers have been trapped for a week. Officials have located the whereabouts of four individuals using radar technology, Telangana Excise Minister Jupally Krishna Rao confirmed on Saturday.
“In my view, the whereabouts of four persons have been located through radar,” Krishna Rao said, expressing hope that they could be extracted by Sunday evening. However, he added that their chances of survival remain extremely slim. “I had said on the first day itself that the chances of survival are very, very remote. I am waiting with a one per cent hope,” he stated.
Desilting operations are underway manually in the area where the four individuals have been detected. Meanwhile, scientists from the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) used Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) to detect anomalies inside the tunnel, giving rescuers crucial leads.
The remaining four trapped individuals appear to be stuck beneath the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), which is being carefully cut to aid the operation. “It may take some time to get a breakthrough about them,” the minister added.
Over 11 agencies, including the Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and expert rat miners, are involved in the complex operation, which faces challenges such as slush and unstable tunnel conditions. The minister defended the pace of the rescue efforts, stressing that the safety of the personnel is a priority.
Eight engineers and laborers were trapped inside the tunnel after a roof collapse on February 22. The rescue mission continues in full swing, with officials working on dewatering and repairing the damaged conveyor belt as part of the multi-pronged efforts.
