Wayanad, 26th Jan. Congress MLA I C Balakrishnan was arrested on Saturday in connection with the alleged abetment of suicide of N M Vijayan, a Wayanad District Congress Committee (DCC) treasurer, and his son. Balakrishnan was later released on bail as the court had earlier granted him anticipatory bail.

According to the police, Balakrishnan’s arrest followed two days of questioning. The arrest marks the conclusion of interrogations and legal actions against all the accused in the case.

Previously, DCC president N D Appachan and former treasurer K K Gopinath were also arrested and subsequently released on anticipatory bail.

The Principal Sessions Court in Kalpetta had directed Balakrishnan to appear for interrogation over three days beginning January 23, as a condition of his anticipatory bail.

Background of the Case
The police charged Balakrishnan and three others under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to abetment of suicide. The charges stem from the deaths of 78-year-old Vijayan and his 38-year-old son Jijesh, who succumbed at Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital on December 27, 2024, after a suicide attempt.

The incident has sparked a political controversy, with allegations linking Balakrishnan to a cooperative bank job scam that allegedly drove the duo to take the extreme step. Vijayan is accused of collecting money from individuals for job placements in a Congress-controlled cooperative bank, reportedly at Balakrishnan’s behest.

The ruling CPI(M) has used the case to criticize the Congress, alleging systemic corruption and exploitation within the party’s ranks.
