Jamshedpur, 23rd November. The political fate of several prominent leaders, including Congress’s Ajoy Kumar and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, is set to be determined as results of the Jharkhand Assembly elections unfold. After 12 of 21 rounds of counting, Congress candidate Ajoy Kumar is trailing BJP’s Purnima Das Sahu by a significant margin of over 27,000 votes in the high-profile Jamshedpur East Assembly seat.
Key Contest: Ajoy Kumar vs. Purnima Das Sahu
Ajoy Kumar, a former IPS officer and Congress leader, has been a household name in Jamshedpur since his tenure as the city’s SP. Known for his work as an encounter specialist and a former MP for Jamshedpur in the 15th Lok Sabha, Kumar has also held several key roles in the Congress, including serving as the AICC in charge of four states and as a National Spokesperson.
His opponent, BJP’s Purnima Das Sahu, is the daughter-in-law of Raghubar Das, the former Jharkhand Chief Minister and current Governor of Odisha. The BJP has a stronghold in the Jamshedpur East constituency, with Raghubar Das having represented the seat for nearly two decades until his defeat in 2019 by independent candidate Saryu Roy.
Jamshedpur East, known as Jharkhand’s industrial hub and home to Tata Steel, has been a bastion for the BJP-led NDA. However, the 2019 assembly election saw a dramatic shift when Saryu Roy defeated Raghubar Das, signaling cracks in the BJP’s dominance.
In the current election, the BJP appears poised to reclaim its stronghold, with Purnima Das Sahu capitalizing on the constituency’s legacy and her family’s political influence.
Other Key Battles in Jharkhand
In Dhanwar, BJP’s Babulal Marandi is leading against JMM’s Nijamuddin Ansari, adding to the BJP’s strong performance in the state. As counting continues, Ajoy Kumar faces an uphill battle to close the widening gap. His campaign has emphasized his administrative credentials and promises of inclusive development. However, the BJP’s organizational strength and Purnima Sahu’s strategic campaigning have given the saffron party a decisive edge in Jamshedpur East.
With the counting still underway, the final results will reveal whether Congress can stage a comeback in one of the most-watched seats in Jharkhand or if the BJP reasserts its dominance in this industrial heartland.
