New Delhi, 5th Feb. As Delhi prepares for its Assembly elections on February 5, 2025, with results set to be declared on February 8, all major political parties are putting in their full efforts to win the trust of voters. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have deployed their senior leaders on the ground, while Congress is also making a strong push to regain lost ground. BJP aims to end its 25-year drought, while AAP seeks to secure a third consecutive term. Meanwhile, Congress is focused on reclaiming its lost voter base.
However, a recent survey by C-Voter could pose a challenge for AAP. According to data gathered until February 1, the survey reveals that 43.9% of Delhi’s electorate is dissatisfied with the current AAP government’s performance and seeks a change. In contrast, 38.3% of people expressed contentment with the government, while 10.9% are dissatisfied but do not want a change.
The survey shows a decline in the proportion of people who do not want any change, with the figure dropping from 46.9% in January to a lower percentage now, which raises concerns for AAP. If those dissatisfied with the government decide to vote for change, it could significantly impact AAP’s prospects in the election.
Several factors will determine the outcome of the election. One key factor is the division of Muslim votes. With approximately 13% Muslim voters in Delhi, this demographic has traditionally supported Congress but shifted to AAP in the 2015 and 2020 elections. If Congress manages to regain some of this support, AAP may face a loss in both votes and seats.
Another critical factor is the Dalit vote. Historically aligned with Congress, this vote has also been divided between AAP and BJP. The BJP has been focusing on local outreach to secure Dalit votes, particularly in areas with slum clusters, where promises of better housing and continuation of welfare schemes are resonating with voters. AAP, too, faces competition from BJP for this crucial demographic.
The leadership battle is another significant element this time. Arvind Kejriwal’s image has taken a hit due to allegations in the liquor scam case, and his personal brand is not as strong as it once was. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal remains unchanged, maintaining a strong influence over voters.
Campaign promises are also playing a vital role in shaping voter sentiment. BJP is countering AAP’s promise of “freebies” with its own pledge of financial assistance under the women’s scheme, offering up to ₹2,500. It has also committed to continuing existing welfare programs.
Congress, despite its declining electoral performance in recent years, could play a pivotal role in shaping the election results. While Congress’ vote share has steadily decreased since 2008—from 35% to a mere 4% in 2020—its strategy for the 2025 elections is centered around reclaiming lost ground and challenging AAP directly.
If Congress manages to regain 10% of its vote share, it could significantly disrupt AAP’s chances of retaining power. With leaders like Rahul Gandhi launching direct attacks on Kejriwal, accusing him of corruption and failure in managing key issues like the Yamuna river, Congress aims to chip away at AAP’s support base and make an impact in the final tally.
