New Delhi, 18th Nov. Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav on Sunday labeled the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) a “sinking ship” following the resignation of senior leader and Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot. Yadav’s remarks came after Gahlot outlined his reasons for quitting, which included the AAP government’s failure to clean the Yamuna river and corruption allegations related to the construction of the ‘sheeshmahal’, a term coined by the BJP to describe the official residence of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
In his resignation letter to Kejriwal, Gahlot criticized the government for not delivering on its promises, particularly the long-standing issue of cleaning the Yamuna river. He also raised concerns over the alleged misuse of public funds in the construction of the luxury residence, referring to it as “embarrassing and awkward,” a sentiment that has fueled growing doubts about the party’s commitment to its founding principles of being the party of the “aam aadmi.”
Yadav seized on these issues, stating that the AAP’s disintegration was inevitable, given the increasing lack of trust and faith among the public.
Meanwhile, Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva also weighed in, highlighting that many of the issues Gahlot raised had been long-standing points of criticism by the BJP. Sachdeva lamented that Kejriwal’s leadership was failing to take responsibility, often attributing the departure of senior leaders like Gahlot to external pressures or personal gain, thus damaging their reputations.
The BJP leader accused the AAP of focusing more on character assassination and opportunism than on the well-being of Delhi’s residents. He also criticized the party’s attempt to discredit former allies like Gahlot and Rajkumar Anand, both of whom had been seen as trusted members of Kejriwal’s inner circle before leaving the party.
