Prayagraj, 25th Jan. Amid the ongoing fervor surrounding the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, where millions of devotees are taking a holy dip at the Sangam, a viral image has been circulating on social media, claiming the arrest of a terrorist named Ayub Khan. The image, showing two police officers apprehending a sadhu with his hands bound by ropes, was accompanied by a caption suggesting that Ayub Khan, disguised as a sadhu, was plotting a major crime.
The post’s caption reads: “Terrorist Ayub Khan arrested at the Kumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh. He came disguised as a sadhu and mingled with our saints. He was planning the biggest crime as taught by his religion. By God’s grace, our sadhus noticed his actions and handed him over to the police.”
Upon conducting a fact check, the image was analyzed using Google Lens. However, no credible media reports could be found that featured the viral image. Further investigations into the term “Ayub Khan at Kumbh Mela” led us to reports published by Navbharat Times and Hindustan on January 15, 2025. According to these reports, a suspicious young man named Ayub was apprehended by the police outside the Juna Akhara’s Mahamandaleshwar and Dasna Temple Mahant Yati Narsinghanand Giri’s Kumbh camp on January 14.
The man, initially identified as Ayush, was questioned by saints who became suspicious of him. When the police interrogated him more rigorously, he revealed his true name—Ayub. A report from Dainik Bhaskar revealed that Ayub Ali, a resident of Aliganj in Etah, was arrested. The local police confirmed that Ayub had no criminal history, though he was known to be addicted to drugs. Investigations also revealed that his family had relocated to Jaipur years ago.
Upon reviewing the viral image, it became clear that the person identified as Ayub in the image was not the same person mentioned in the report. The image showed an elderly individual, whereas the man arrested in the reports was a younger person.
Further analysis of the viral image using AI tools like Open AI Image Detector, Is It AI?, and Hive.ai confirmed that the photo was artificially generated, not real. To clarify the situation, we contacted the DIG’s office in Prayagraj, where the PR officer confirmed, “No terrorist has been arrested from the Kumbh Mela premises. The claim circulating on social media is false.”
This investigation concludes that the viral image is fabricated and generated through AI technology.
